One last thing. It is possible the item was brought to the lake from a dig site. We purchased tons of rock from a dig site/Quarry to place on the shoreline behind the house. So we don’t know for sure that it came from the lake as we found it in the rocks that were purchased a few years ago.

@vperez thank you for your review. I doubt this last image would change your mind, but I thought I’d attach anyway. I do understand the porosity you mentioned. Do these image change your eval? Just want to make certain before we move on from this find.

    Hi all!

My family and I found this on the shoreline of Whitmore Lake, Michigan. I am certain it is a “tailbone“. You can see the spinal canal very clearly as well as the classic 3 segments in the coccyx bone. Looking for help identifying and how to connect with a team that could evaluate and possibly carbon date?

You can’t DM people (at least I don’t think), but you can tag them into posts and they will be alerted to come to this post, as you have just done by typing @smoran .

Hi @amber-monroe! I had to do some research on the geology around Whitmore Lake before replying. It looks like all of the rocks are Mississippian in age, so ~360-325 million years ago. The specimen certainly looks peculiar, but I don’t see any identifiable features to definitively say it’s fossil. That certainly doesn’t mean that it’s not, but I…[Read more]

While it is an unusually shaped stone, I see nothing indicating that it is a fossil
