That’s very cool, nice find. I’m not a professor of paleontology like most others allude to being on here, but don’t let them tell you it’s just a rock 🪨

Aloha, I am not an expert either, however, I have been in the field for a minute or two, unlike the quasi geologists on here, and I have respect for those who know, it’s just the book>field advice that is given to us here by those with little concept of time, or vision of what happens to matter when exposed to a myriad of different environments a…[Read more]

7 months, 2 weeks ago7 months, 2 weeks ago@mason-hintermeister you may be correct and I’m not saying you’re not however in the other photos there are scale like or shell like patterns which can be observed as well as a smooth spine like area …it does resemble photos that of turtle fossils or perhaps alligator as the scales appear very small. Of course I’m no expert just trying to put…[Read more]

@anne-victoria Hello! This is chert, the patches are what is called cortex, it is a sort of weathered “rind” or “skin” which happens to due natural wear and oxidation
-
@mason-hintermeister what about what appears to be a spine?
-
@anna-victoria I a not 100% sure to which feature you are referring, but it is likely a natural feature of the rock. Good eye for patterns though, keep looking and there may be fossils to be found!

@anna-victoria These are natural fractures, they form at right angles due to natural cleavage planes within the rock. As someone who makes stone tools as a hobby, this often causes an issue called “step fractures,” which happen when the flake you want to make (which is usually conchoidal, or shell shaped with tapering edges) runs into a cleavage…[Read more]

No sorry. This is a stone. Trilobites show 3 sets of ridges. Check Google images.
