this looks like it might be a crinoid calyx
-
Could this perhaps be part of a calyx of a sea lily. Compare with images.
-
Thanks

I am totally so jealous of your specimens. You seem to be able to get to some great sites. Here in South Africa it is not safe to be off fossilhunting on my own. I hunt my fossils on ebay these days and turn bright green with envy every niw and then..Enjoybyou

i’m not sure how much prep you could do, but it is a nice brachiopod.
-
@naomi-richter – well, ‘prep’ experience is using a needle to dig out any debris lodged in small places. So, you are right – probably would help much on this one. But, if someone suggested there were much more to uncover, I would start trying to learn true techniques. What I really still don’t understand is if whole specimens are typically found…[Read more]

2 months ago2 months agoAngular specimen. Potential fossil? Could it be part of a crinoid calyx? A scute or tooth?
-
There seems to be a few micro fossil but overall it looks like mostly sandstone. The very straight lines and symetrical shape makes me wonder if this is an artifact? I must say this one is really tricky.
-
Check amongst images of Paleo Indian artifacts.in Google images.
-
@lynette-luff I followed your advice – so far no matching artifacts. ‘Large’ crinoids are known in this area yet I can’t find details of size range – so ‘crinoid calyx plate’ may be a wild guess – but the way the fit together like a geometric puzzle is interesting. For anyone interested in crinoid plates, this article has several diagrams.…[Read more]

This does not appear to be a fossil, it also does not appear to be a stone tool.
-
@mason-hintermeister ok thanks! so maybe the morphology is just due to the innate characteristics of the rock/mineral?
-
I hope all the pics are available- the least helpful one is the front photo & I don’t see a way to edit
-
Thanx @mason- hintermeister. This was a real doozi.
-
@stephanie-morris There are two possibilities I think which are hard to tell without having it in hand, most likely I think it’s a natural sandstone with a high iron content, I’ve see them form almost geometric patterns like this many times. The other possibility is that this is sandstone shaped for the facade of a building or something, if…[Read more]

Thanks @Mason-hintermeister for your detailed thoughts about this specimen. My search for similar images was fruitless for both artifacts and fossils which is consistent with your feedback. I always learn so much from puzzling through these specimens. Thanks!

There seems to be a piece of bone on the top right. There are however a lot if indentations. I want to make a suggestion. Take some plasticine or funny putty. Kneed until soft and make an impression of the indentations. You are going to get a lovely surprise. The details of the indentations are usually exquisite.

2 months, 1 week ago2 months, 1 week agoNever found a fossil here before, but often very beautiful minerals. Natives roamed this reservation a long time ago. But 3 same deposits on it. Not sure if mineral deposits or possible fossil? Any ideas? #collectionsite
-
Hello there it is difficult to see. May I suggest that you take some plasticine or some funny putty and make some impressions of the holes. I have had some really nice surprises. Sometimes the fossils have eroded out and the details on the impressions are quite accurate.
-
That’s a good idea! I think I can find some silly putty. Thanks! @lynette-luff
-
Nothing here is easily identifiable as a fossil, however you should be in a place with Jurassic sandstone. As far as I am aware, it is not particularly fossiliferous but fossils are a possible find so keep an eye out!
-
@mason-hintermeister thank you for that!! I had no idea of that and looked it up and there’s so much info to look into

This looks to be bone. It could be part of a rib? It is tiny.
-
@lynette-luff Thank you, I have no idea about identifying fossils. Have you got any tips, even if it is to do with either bone structure appearances or identifying time periods?
-
Ive learned there is a technique called the tongue test . I kid you not. Apparently this us a rite of passage for us fossil hunters. You taste the fossil. If it sticks to your tongue it is a fossil. If it diesnt
-
@lynette-luff the tongue test is a bit of an urban myth in paleontology! While it certainly works sometimes for fossil bone specifically due to it’s porosity, there are many instances fossil bone won’t stick and many instances in which non-fossils will stick so it is very unreliable. It also is perhaps not the most hygienic thing to be doing, so I…[Read more]

@joe-domjan Fossils from Whitby are from the upper triassic to early jurassic if memory serves. I have not seen many of this color from there, they tend to be jet black, though I am not an expert on fossils from the site. My first reaction was echinoid spine, though it could be a fish bit as well.
-
@mason-hintermeister Echinoid spine looks very similar in comparison so could be a possibility. A shape like this makes me feel that it cannot be coincidentally shaped like a bone to be a spine however. I am not an expert, I am curious if there is any way to clarify that it is a fossil and not wood.
-
@mason-hintermeister If you happen to have any speculation, what kind of “fish bit” would you distinguish this as – Could be the fish type or area of the fish?
-
@joe-domjan In the fossil deposits, it is not unusual to find fish pectoral spines of similar shape, however I am unfamiliar with Jurassic fish so I can’t say if they have similar structures. I have some fish material from Whitby at home, nothing directly comparable. Fish bones are more or less the only type of vertebrate material of which I am…[Read more]

Joe apologies for the tongue test thing. I am thankful to Mason for his insight, so I dont perpetuate false information. Hehe, did I fall for it or what?

I looked at some images using @masonhintermeisters suggestion. Echinoid spines did not match. Check out fossil Catfish spines.

Maybe rib?

Taking a wild guess Id say perhaps a crinoid calyx as the nearest looking images I could find were amongst the Permian and Mississippian time zones. I must say though I could not find anything clearer than those.
