It might also be a sponge (Porifera).
-
That makes more sense 🤦🏼♀️
-
Hi, @Becky-Honey! Could you post a clearer photo and perhaps more photos from different angles?
-
Yes I will post more tomorrow in the day light 😁
-
@samantha-ocon how do I add more pics? Do I have to make separate posts?
-
Hi, @Becky-Honey, if you click the tab that says images when viewing the specimen from a computer, you should be taken to a page that allows you to add more photos. Let me know if you have any other issues; also, if you go ahead and google “Favosites” does that seem to match the pattern inside?

I see them, @Becky-Honey! I look forward to seeing what is inside this specimen!

Hi @becky-honey These are brachiopods, shelled creatures similar to clams in that there are 2 valves but unlike clams, have different shaped upper and lower valves and filter feed with cillia instead of a siphon. There are still a few species alive today.
-
Cool! Thanks 😊

hi i would try to first brush of any loose swdiments with a mild toothbrush. maybe some clean water. i would not any chemicals or vinegar….
-
or with some dental pick tools.
-
Dip it in hot and soapy water and then if any sediment isn’t coming off use an old toothbrush to clean it up and brush it up
-
Your fossil is very, very ancient
-
It would date back to the Cambrian era
-
That would have originated from the first era in the history of complex life (542 million years ago to 488 million years ago)
-

@jack-parker-tyreman not so sure about the Cambrian. Brachiopods existed from the Cambrian to present day, and New York isn’t that old. If it was found in a gravel pit, it could’ve been imported from somewhere else.
-
They dig and sort their own gravel from the land there.

Looks like coral or a fenestrate bryozoan fragment.
Could it be a favosite?
I thought that could be a sponge
If it is a coral, probably a tabulate coral (which includes favosite corals) but not sure if it is a favosite coral. @samantha-ocon could you please help identify, thank you!
Most likely some fossilized coral
