Looks like a brachiopod, order strophomenida
-
@a-trilobite thanks. it does look like that order
-
@a-trilobite do you know what type of rock this is in? how do I identify these rocks from the rest?
-
It might be sandstone, but I’m not sure. I also don’t know what the rest of the rocks in the area look like, but looking for specific colors, patterns, and textures helps
-
@a-trilobite is there a specific way to identify limestone from Sandstone? sandstone has a compressed grainy texture because of it being sand that has turned to stone
-
but I have no idea what limestone looks like
-
i searched online but they all look different
-
Limestone is generally gray and they’re made of calcium carbonate. The calcium actually comes from eroded pieces of shells, so technically every piece of limestone is a fossil of some kind. The outer surface of limestone is usually eroded and dull, but the inside still sparkles with reflective pieces of calcite. Less eroded pieces of limestone s…[Read more]

South Africa Laingsburg. group ecca

South africa laingsburg. deep marine possibly. group ecca. Also do you know what type of Rock this fossil is in?
-
The ecca group is late Carboniferous to early Permian in age (303-290 mya) and the rock you have is made of hardened sea floor mud (the orange is deposited iron). As far as the fossil itself goes, I honestly don’t know. I tried researching for ecca group fossils but didn’t find much. I’d take it to a local expert, they’d probably know what it is.
