1 year, 6 months ago1 year, 6 months agoFossil found in Swart Berge in South Africa. The fossils here are marine and Im not sure what this might be. Its as big as two thumbs in length. Its most likely in the Ecca group which is around 290 mja in the Permian age. #fossil

That pattern looks like a trilobite’s segmented body, but I didn’t see any records of trilobites in the Ecca group. Also, trilobites were becoming increasingly rare (only two Permian groups) because they would go extinct shortly. The Ecca group seems to be known for trace fossils, but I don’t know for sure what this could be

@bernard-weich this is a trilobite, seems devonian and silurian are the ages of the rock in the area. Use the app or website rockd to figure out which formation and then you can look at literature (use Google Scholar) and find what type of trilobites are found in it

2 years, 4 months ago2 years, 4 months ago@a-trilobite is there a specific way to identify limestone from Sandstone? sandstone has a compressed grainy texture because of it being sand that has turned to stone

@bernard-weich Nice find! Could you add a picture of the specimen with a coin or rule next to it for scale?
