2 months, 1 week ago2 months, 1 week agoI was out poking around for fossils after a pretty big king tide storm on the Oregon coast, outside of Newport, in Lincoln County. I found several odd fossils I had not seen at this location before, but nothing as strange as this one! At first, I thought it looked like bone, so I wrapped it and put it in my pack. I when I got home and looked at…[Read more]

I wonder if this possibly has a connection with asbestos?
-
@nyla-alisia this is a fossil fish vertebra (more specifically, the vertebral body or centrum). It has been eroded into a cross section. I need a more specific location to determine the age, but Oregon has a lot of eocene, oligocene, and miocene sediments along the coast if memory serves. Nice find!

1 year, 7 months ago1 year, 7 months agoHello,
Thank you for sharing! Unfortunately, it will be difficult to verify this is a fossil without some more information and photos. Since it is a landscape boulder, it will likely be very hard or impossible to determine where the rock originated from. Knowing where it came from would be extremely important for determining the age and what…[Read more]

Victor Perez replied to the topic Crocodile Tooth? in the forum What Is It? 1 year, 10 months ago
1 year, 10 months ago1 year, 10 months agoHi Pete, I think you are correct. The tooth appears to be from the marine crocodile, Thecachampsa. The fossils at Holden Beach come from multiple stratigraphic layers, so it is difficult to narrow down the age of your tooth and the specific identity.
You may also want to compare your tooth with mosasaur teeth, which can also be found at Holden.…[Read more]
