1 month, 3 weeks ago1 month, 3 weeks agoAdditionally we have the issue of Archaeology vs. Paleontology. Archaeology is the study of man particularly man made objects such as the pyramids, arrowheads, axes, pottery, etc. Paleontology is the study of ancient life, i.e. fossils of animal and plant life. Man made objects are NOT fossils. I am sure there are plenty of archaeology sit…[Read more]

If it is out focus, I am going to state that it is out of focus, monitor it for a few days to give you a chance to retake the picture, and then if it is not reposted, I am going to delete it. Images must be in .jpg form. I have had images that in order to view I hav…[Read more]

I had absolutely nothing to do with the design of this app. It existed well before I was an online curator. Posting poor pictures is on the picture taker not the app developer. Do you blame Amazon when you upload a picture that no one can tell what it is?

1 month, 3 weeks ago1 month, 3 weeks agoOne of the MOST important details to add identification is the location of where you found it (and no we don’t want your house address). The location can give us information of the geologic formation and age of the fossil which is key data for identification. If you bought it, indicate so. We want your specimens and have no use items in a museum.

Victor Perez replied to the topic Crocodile Tooth? in the forum What Is It? 2 months ago
2 months ago2 months agoHi Pete, I think you are correct. The tooth appears to be from the marine crocodile, Thecachampsa. The fossils at Holden Beach come from multiple stratigraphic layers, so it is difficult to narrow down the age of your tooth and the specific identity.
You may also want to compare your tooth with mosasaur teeth, which can also be found at Holden.…[Read more]

Victor Perez replied to the topic Who can tell what I’ve found? in the forum What Is It? 5 months, 2 weeks ago
5 months, 2 weeks ago5 months, 2 weeks agoHonestly, some parts of it look like a limestone or dolomite and other parts of it look like chert. It may not be from the Avon Park Formation, but it could be from a unit that is the same age in Alabama. This website mentions the “Claiborn/Jackson Group” which include “fossiliferous chert and limestone boulders”.…[Read more]

5 months, 2 weeks ago5 months, 2 weeks agoI think this is a chunk of dolomite, possibly from the Eocene Avon Park Formation. The molds/impressions seem to mostly be bivalves, but the second photo you posted looks like a partial echinoid (sea urchin). I don’t know the invertebrates well enough to give you any species names.

Victor Perez replied to the topic Fossil- Vetebral Body from what? in the forum What Is It? 7 months, 1 week ago
7 months, 1 week ago7 months, 1 week agoHi Todd,
My best guess would be that it is either an ichthyosaur or dinosaur vertebra, given that the Cretaceous interior seaway cut through Phillips County, Montana.
There is a small museum you could visit/reach out to for more information: https://mtdinotrail.org/phillips-county-museum/
Best,
Victor
