3 years, 1 month ago3 years, 1 month agoThank you @chloe-geddes for the information. The time scavenger blog link was very helpful and interesting. Going to check out the zombie link shortly. This specimen weighs a good deal more than what a modern clam would weigh and it is solid like rock. I think it’s a fossil but not 100% certain so I will see what I can do with determining a d…[Read more]

3 years, 1 month ago3 years, 1 month ago@leonardo-miranda@chloe-geddes I see what you mean about they bryozoan. Did you find any specific species or group that this falls under because when you look up bryozoan it comes up with tons of different kinds.

3 years, 1 month ago3 years, 1 month ago@a-trilobite@chloe-geddes l did some more research with regards to bryozoans, and l think they do fit the identity better. the majority of bryozoans that I’ve seen prior to this have always looked quite different, but now tgat l researched more types then it makes sense for this to be one.

3 years, 1 month ago3 years, 1 month ago@chloe-geddes that’s very interesting, I’ve never heard of a rind stone before. It’s always fun to learn something new!

3 years, 1 month ago3 years, 1 month ago@chloe-geddes I looked up weathering rinds but I don’t see anything that looks like mine. Does that mean I have something else or just a special weather rind?

3 years, 1 month ago3 years, 1 month agoGreetings all! This one puzzles me. I’ve seen chert deposits like this in similar looking matrix which was part of the Fort Payne Chert. Perhaps it is from an invertebrate, but I can’t tell. @chloe-geddes might be the better judge for this specimen.

3 years, 2 months ago3 years, 2 months ago@chloe-geddes I’m sticking with my fish teeth idea, I don’t know of any shells that look like that, and even if there are the odds of them forming in a line like that is VERY unlikely. If you check out the article I mentioned earlier, it has pictures of what I believe this fossil to be.

3 years, 2 months ago3 years, 2 months agoThanks @a-trilobite ! This one actually is difficult to determine. I first thought it was a mineral formation, but it also looks like some form of marine life. @chloe-geddes might be able to determine if it’s a mineral formation or not.

3 years, 2 months ago3 years, 2 months agoIt’s something…it was probably round while alive but was disfigured by fossilization. It also has a pattern of holes all along the outside. My ideas are a crinoid stem fragment or a piece of coral, but I don’t know for sure. Maybe @chloe-geddes would though.

3 years, 2 months ago3 years, 2 months ago@daniel-park@chloe-geddes Yep, it’s wood. The problem with wood is that it has to be identified in a lab. We have to take cross sections of the specimen and then look at the cellular structure under the microscope so I can’t put a name on it. The only fun tid-bit I can add is that there were a lot of forest fires during the Cretaceous so it we…[Read more]

3 years, 2 months ago3 years, 2 months ago@chloe-geddes, @smudge-smith I agree with @jim-barkley. To add on to it a little more, this looks like a Mazon Creek nodule which puts it at about 309 Ma (mid-Pennsylvanian which is part of the Carboniferous). Mazon Creek nodules come from the Francis Creek Shale Member of the Carbondale Formation.

3 years, 2 months ago3 years, 2 months agoPerhaps I am mistaken, but I have seen stone with a similar erosion pattern. The alternative could be mineralized plant material. As you mentioned, @chloe-geddes has would probably know better.
