part of a mollusc shell
-
Thanks!
-
@leonardo-miranda I don’t see any resemblance of a mollusk shell, it more closely resembles a jaw bone but I’m not sure about that, the part that throws me off are the ridges in the middle.
-
That’s what I was thinking but can’t quite figure out what species
-
Greetings all I remember seeing a specimen like this posted a year ago. @bill-heim could certainly help
-
It is part of the outer lip of a mollusc, probably a helmet conch, Cassis sp.
-
It’s part of a mollusc
-
Yes, it’s a mollusk shell with ridges on the interior opening (like a conch), and it’s a happy accident that this fragment resembles a jaw. Very cool!
-
Thanks guys!

Greetings @christy-olsen ! Your specimen appears to be a metamorphic rock. With Bryson City occupying the Crystalline Appalachians of NC, fossils will be practically impossible to find since they almost exclusively appear in sedimentary rock. The geological forces which created the Appalachians will have destroyed or extremely distorted any…[Read more]
