Part of an ammonite or baculite. You can see the dendrite shaped sutures that are characteristic.
Also known as a Buffalo Stone as if viewed from the top it somewhat resembles the shape of a buffalo. But it’s baculite/ammonite segment as mentioned.
I see the inner chambers of an ammonite shell
Greetings all! While the ID offered seems true, there are some geochronology issues with the specimen. The area around Maple Valley is principally Pleistocene and from what I know the majority of ammonite species died out with the K-P boundary extinction event.
The Puget Group is closest geologically, but that is still only Eocene.
good to know!!
@Matthew-Gramling is correct in the general ages of the area. However Washington is a complete mess of stuff, and while googling I found the paper linked below, which includes baculites collected from an Island in Vancouver. What little I know of “buffalo stones” and Native Americans is they are somewhat talismanic, and might have been carried to where you found it. Or possibly it was moved by the general reason given for any weird rock in Washington, glaciers. Also, hello fellow Seattleite.

Thanks @corinne-daycross ! That would explain the mystery of the geochronology.
