7 years, 6 months ago7 years, 6 months agoSure thing. I’ll post them soon. I’m not sure of the species, but they are Pentremites. Maybe Jen can help ID the species level.

7 years, 6 months ago7 years, 6 months agoThe middle plate is a spirifer, maybe Mucrospirifer. The internal casts are a bit harder. I searched the michiganbasinfossils.org site and a few look similar. Athyris and Atrypa have the thickness/roundness, but I’m unsure if they have the central ridge seen on the above specimens. Please share the site with Peter and let me know what…[Read more]

7 years, 6 months ago7 years, 6 months agoHi Lisa,
The Friends don’t have as many presentations or speakers as I’d like. Our meetings are also in the old museum with some “technology” limitations. We plan to move our meetings to the new collections center early next year and I hope we’ll get more speakers. The FossilProject did sponsor Dr. Kidwell to speak to our group. Other than that,…[Read more]

Could the family be Dolatocrinidae or is that out of date?

I need to brush up on the recent papers out of the Ausich lab on crinoid taxonomy…
-
This is a Clarkeocrinus troosti, named for John Clarke, the first director of the New York State Museum. It’s a common crinoid from the Devonian of New York. Winifred Goldring’s memoir is a free download and great resource for New York crinoids. The NYSM website has the free pdf.
-
Yeah! I agree with your species identification but was working to fill in the family assignment as you have it blank in the classification scheme.
-
I’m sorry. I thought you were questioning the genus/species. We have quite a few Dolotacrinus species in Alpena and Arkona and I missed your “family” comment.
I think you’re correct about Dolatocrinidae. I’ll have to look at Davey’s paper to confirm.
-
No worries! It’s on the taxonomists for naming things so similarly, it gets really confusing!
