3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoHi @david-hanes! It seems like there are a number of mFeM numbers associated with this one specimen. I’d like to combine all of the other photos into this one upload (mFeM 78161) since they are all from the same individual and delete the other numbers associated with it. Could you add the other photos to this mFeM number? Thanks!

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months ago@david-hanes It depends on the locality, but generally, at least some preparation is necessary. Sometimes its just a light wash and scrub under water and sometimes an air scribe and air abrasive are needed.

3 years, 9 months ago3 years, 9 months agoThanks @david-hanes! Yeah, I understand completely. It can be so hard to tell sometimes whether a specimen is or is not a fossil (i.e., Pleistocene vs. Holocene/modern) even in areas that have a definitive Pleistocene component to the fauna. Permineralization can occur pretty quickly in modern bone, particularly in creeks, giving the specimens a…[Read more]

3 years, 9 months ago3 years, 9 months agoHi @david-hanes, this looks like the left hypoplastron of an emydid turtle. I used Pseudemys as my reference and it looks pretty similar, but I am no expert in turtles and tortoises. I think we can pretty confidently ID it down to the Family Emydidae, though.

3 years, 9 months ago3 years, 9 months agoHey @david-hanes, ribs are notoriously difficult to pin to a specific taxon without the context of what is found within a given unit. I fear Mammalia is about as good as we are going to get in this case. As with the other specimens, we need some confirmation that these are definitively Pleistocene and not modern bone.

3 years, 9 months ago3 years, 9 months agoHi @david-hanes! I’m pretty sure from the photos this is a raccoon tibia. Take a look at some photos online (or this 3D model https://virtualcurationmuseum.wordpress.com/making-no-bones-about-it-making-no-bones-about-it-why-zoorchaeologists-study-animal-bones-found-at-archaeological-sites/virtualizing-a-raccoon-skeleton/raccoon-tibia/) and compare…[Read more]

3 years, 9 months ago3 years, 9 months agoHey @david-hanes, do you have any references for what Pleistocene formation(s) may crop out in this area? I’ve checked a few of my references and I am only seeing Cretaceous along this creek. I’m just trying to confirm that these specimens (including the tibia and rib that you posted) are indeed Pleistocene and not just modern bones that washed…[Read more]

3 years, 11 months ago3 years, 11 months agoHi @David-Hanes, I do see that this could be weathering or perhaps an internal mold. Are there records of Discoscaphites in Mississippi?

3 years, 11 months ago3 years, 11 months agoThis is so cool, @David-Hanes. It’s a little loosely coiled for Discoscaphites, but I’m not super well versed in ammonites. @Jbauer, do we know any ammonite people?
