Yes, it is impossible for a Mississippian fossil to be a flowering plant since flowering plants will not have evolved for about 200 million years. Florissantia is even more recent than the first flowering plants. What you have is a very nice aboral cup of a crinoid, which is the base of the crown. This is the point at which the calyx or the crown…[Read more]

@devin-kent Awesome find! I spy multiple trilobite fragments (or dare I say trilo-bits!), the glabella piece allows me to say these are likely Flexicalymene (perhaps F. seneria?). I would not recommend extraction, they are likely parts from molts. If you take a picture with a scale, and update the classification, location, lithostratigraphy, and…[Read more]

@mason-hintermeister sorry it took me so long to update this post. I believe I provided the details needed and also included a couple of photos with an inch scale

@devin-kent Nice find! If you want this to be marked research grade, you’ll have to go through a few extra steps. First, use the taxon wizard to fill in the classification field to Myliobatiformes. Second, fill in the lithostratigraphy section. If memory serves, these fossils come from offshore deposits of the Bone Valley Member of the Peace River…[Read more]

1 year, 9 months ago1 year, 9 months ago@mason-hintermeister according to Rockd and where I physically found the material (cut out wall behind commercial property) this is the Indian Bluff Formation and the Pennsylvanian/ Morrowan Age. The approximate x, y, z coordinates are -84.2409, 36.3849, 698 m / 2290 ft. Hopefully that helps. I wish I would have looked there longer as there was a…[Read more]

Lovely shreds of plant remains, unfortunately identifying them beyond that will be difficult! If you want me to mark it research grade you need to fill out the classification, lithstratigraphy, and geochronology fields. Let me know if you have any questions or if you’ve filled them out by tagging me. Thanks and nice finds!

Maybe a scute or mouth plate, check what animals lived in the area at the time and try to find a match
the symmetry makes me think its a tooth
You found a beautiful weathered scute! Looks like it’s from a crocodilian- not Mississippian- rather Pleistocene in age… maybe a slight bit older but certainly an American alligator scute.
