4 years ago4 years agoHi all- sorry for the delay, I don’t believe it is from an invertebrate. Certainly it is not an echinoderm! Really interesting specimen, thank you for uploading so many images!

Very cool, @Lisa-Lundgren! If you are interested in improving the quality of this specimen, there are a few places we could start. For example, this is a coral and since it is from Belgrade, it is Cenozoic in age – this means that it can’t be a rugose or tabulate coral; so we can update the taxonomy to be Kingdom -> Animalia, Phylum -> Cnidaria,…[Read more]

The last bit of my #DayOfScience Scienceathon is going to be spent looking through some of the #UMichPaleo #Devonian collections and recording what is where!
These specimens have undergone two major moves across campus in the past year to end up in this nice off-campus facility. Much of our stratigraphic…[Read more]

4 years, 6 months ago4 years, 6 months agoTo start my first #DayOfScience I wanted to start by answering what a collection manager actually… manages. This will vary between institution and position but is generally true. Most facilities have many cabinets of fossils, check out some of my awesome compact-able cabinets! One of the first paleo projects I worked on was making molds and casts of this anchor structure to test if it could reattach itself to the sediment! I was given so much experimental freedom and am forever grateful! #fossil
