Almost looks like bamboo but I know that doesn’t grow there. Monster crinoid stem?
-
Fossil horsetail plant possibly
-
Hi @dustin-allen, would you be able to update this post with different angles of this specimen (and a scale for reference?), that can help with ID!
-
Paul is on the right track. This is likely from the genus Calamites. @mackenzie-smith can confirm
-
@vperez and @paul-mclain are correct. This is Calamites, the stem genus of an extinct horsetail.
-
Hey @dustin-allen ! This looks very similar to a Carboniferous tree ferns stem, which is unsurprisingly since Pineville is surrounded by Middle Pennsylvanian strata like the Breathitt Group and Hyde
n Formation. -
*Breathitt Group, Pikeville Formation, and Hyden Formation.
-
I suspect it’s Calamites or in the Calamitacae family.
-
@dustin-allen using the information provided by @vperez and @mackenzie-smith you can update your classification, as well as the geologic context to help make this specimen research-grade!
-
A big crinoid fossil???
