4 years, 6 months ago4 years, 6 months agoThis looks like a smaller, more intact version of my last find, which someone commented looks like coral. But it has the exact same shape as the last. I do not know if coral can duplicate shapes like that. Any suggestions? #fossil

Hi @evan-kruse. Corals are colonial animals so each polyp will be the same as the next. However, a colony’s shape can be influenced by its taxonomy (what species it is) and its environment (the amount of light received and how much wave action there is). It’s probably the same species growing in the same environment.

4 years, 6 months ago4 years, 6 months agoI would assume it is a broken shark tooth, since it has the nice two-toned coloration. Are there any serrations on the far side?

4 years, 6 months ago4 years, 6 months agoI believe this is a fossilized sponge that was found in Lithia Springs, Florida. #fossil
Edit: correction. It is probably a coral.

Hi@evan-kruse. It looks like a coral to me.

…. That’s probably right. I can see a little star pattern in the holes, which probably means it isn’t a sponge.
