How do I go about finding out for sure?
-
Use macrostrat.org and put where you found it in. it will tell you the age of the area, so you can see if dino is a possibility. @mason-hintermeister might be able to help. great find though eleven if not dino, the preservation is fantastic.
-
@gail-chapman I agree with Corinne though you might want to use the app rockd to look up the age and formation. I think this is actually a mammal bone. I’ll see if I can find any similar types. Nice find!

Lovely fern @gail-chapman! Kinda crazy you found this in the same area as the Petalodus. You can put class Polypodiopsida for classification and use the taxon wizard to fill in the higher taxonomy. The rest can be filled out like I said on the other post if you want it marked research grade, though you’ll need to take a picture with a coin or…[Read more]

@gail-chapman nice! You can put class crinoidea for them in the classification boxes. The rest of the instructions are the same as the other too. Thanks for sharing your lovely fossils!

@gail-chapman looks like it to me! If you can add that to the classification section (use the taxon wizard to fill in higher taxonomy), then add “Douglas or Lansing group” to lithostratigraphy and Pennsylvanian to geochronology (using the geochronology wizard to fill the other boxes) then tag me I can mark this research grade.

@mackenzie-smith for plant id?

@gail-chapman @corinne-daycross Chances are this came from a Pennsylvanian formation in the Douglas Group. This appears to be Alethopteris though Pecopteris can’t be ruled out entirely. I doubt there is any venation preserved but that would differentiate the two. It is not Sphenopteris because the pinnules are not lobed and it is not Neuropteris…[Read more]
