4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoHi, @heath-carroll, what are you identifying as hip bones? And hip bones of what? I think most of the area you are collecting in is Devonian in age so I would be surprised if you found bone at all outside of maybe some fish teeth.

4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoHi, @heath-carroll I will be very surprised if you are finding cartilage in these rocks. Why don’t you try to take some of the rocks to a local museum or geology department where someone can look at them in person?

4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoI agree with Jenn. On a side note, @heath-carroll if you want to mention someone in a comment you need to use the @ symbol before their username rather than the # symbol. I haven’t been getting notifications for your comments.

4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoHi, @heath-carroll – I’m not seeing any fossil remains in this rock. @vperez and @fauve-wilson are more familiar with rays than I am so maybe they will see something I don’t.

4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoHi @heath-carroll. This is likely a pseudofossil, a rock that looks like a fossil. The Arkansas Geological Survey does a good job of explaining them (how they form) and what they look like. You will have to click the bottom green tab that says pseudofossils. https://www.geology.arkansas.gov/geology/fossils.html Your rock is likely a combination of…[Read more]

4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months ago@heath-carroll – I’m still not seeing anything. I agree with @vperez that it is likely a chunk of limestone. I don’t think you’ll be finding any rays in your area and if you did it would just be the mouth plates.

4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoHi, @heath-carroll – It’s unlikely that fins would preserve because of all the fleshy bits. I’ve only ever found ray teeth, certainly more could preserve but only in very special circumstances so it would be very rare to find them. Are the dots empty holes or are they filled in? There are many other creatures that could be leaving patterns like this.

4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoHi, @heath-carroll – not sure what you are referring to? The shape of the rock? I think it’s just a chunk of limestone with a brachiopod in it.

4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoHi @heath-carroll. Like @jbauer I’m also having a hard time seeing the specimen in question. I can see the rocks behind it quite nicely. Personally, I am unaware of co-occuring plant and animal material in Iowa. Do you know what formation you are collecting in? There are plenty of marine invertebrates that look like plants though including coral,…[Read more]

4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoHi, @heath-carroll I’m thinking this large rock you found is a chunk of chert, sometimes when chert forms it encases fossils and other things then they weather away because they are weaker than the chert. It’s hard to really tell what all is in there or if it’s anything at all.
