Looks like a sphenoid bone of a mammal. The bubble like bump is the auditory bulla or ear area.
@james-preston so cool!! We were thinking about something closer to a head region… any way to figure out from what mammal? Thanks for the info!
About dog sized. Larger dog that is.
Also the Mandibular fossa is present.
@james-preston awesome! Thank you for the help
I can say it is the left side. Looking to see if I can id it
Ok I think I have it. It has the same shapes and size of a seal. Going on what I can see on the second picture.
Not to sure what seals you have in your area but I’m almost certain a seal.
Used the book Animal Skulls by Mark Elbroch, for id.
Ok I’m going to say Harbor Seal. Final answer.
@james-preston too funny because I just said it could be a seal (with thinking of your dog size comment) to my sister! Awesome! Harbor, grey and harp seals are mentioned as winter visitors to the shore in NJ
@james-preston thank you so much! So awesome to have people like you to help ID things. Have a great night!!
Glad to help. I lived all my life here in the wilds of Wisconsin and know the wildlife well. It’s fun to push my brain into areas I don’t have the knowledge about. Yours was such the case. I do however have the reference materials I need to cover the animal remains of the US.
@james-preston cool!! It’s awesome getting the view of all around the country.. I realized this app doesn’t have a strong base in NJ but is the only fossil app I could find. Plus, it’s the friendliest!
