2 years, 10 months ago2 years, 10 months agoThis is a shark’s tooth I found in St. Pete, Florida and on the Gulf of Mexico. It isn’t serrated, or it had tiny serrations that got smoothened out over the years in the water. I’ve narrowed it down to a Mako or a Great White, but I’m probably totally wrong because I don’t know anything about sharks.

Greetings @jake-mckee ! Your specimen appears to be a bone fragment, but there aren’t enough distinguishing features to tell exactly from what.
-
Interesting, thank you!

Looks like petrified wood to me

3 years, 3 months ago3 years, 3 months agoThanks! So yeah, I kinda was an idiot who was licking a fossil. It seemed kind of sketchy, but I found it on reliable websites so I guess that’s what convinced me. But thanks again for telling me that it was indeed a fossil.

3 years, 3 months ago3 years, 3 months agoI heard about a lick test sort of thing. Is this false? I washed my fossil and dried it, and then proceeded to lick it. My tongue sort of stuck a little bit. Did I do something useful, or did I look like an idiot who just picked a rock?

3 years, 3 months ago3 years, 3 months agoMaybe a rock, maybe a tooth. It has a rounded top and it’s cylindrical shaped. I need some help to figure out if it’s not just a rock.
Found it on St. Pete Beach, Florida.-

The lick test is an unscientific test of the porosity of your specimen- if it sticks when you lick it, it is porous. Bones typically have a porous structure, and hence a positive lick test is correlated with bone. However, not all bone fossils are porous and not everything that is porous is bone. Personally, I think that makes it a poor test, but…[Read more]

there’s no way of telling what the bone came from when it is that eroded, unfortunately.

3 years, 3 months ago3 years, 3 months agoUm, maybe. But it’s really thick though. It’s about as thick around as you see the width in the picture. And it does look broken on all the other sides except the one I showed you, suggesting it could be even thicker. Thanks though!

A really, really eroded shark tooth, possibly a megalodon

It can be a tooth of a bison
