Here is one coral paper I found but it doesn’t have many images to help with ID:

@jbauer Too cool! Thanks for the links, I think they’ll be really helpful. Fossil Guy didn’t have much on horn corals, but I think that page will be helpful for identifying other fossils at that site, especially the brachs.
-
Definitely! Jayson has awesome photos. He mentions too common horn coral species – Heliophyllum halli & Stereolasma rectum, so a good starting place for further research!
-
@jbauer Yeah, now that you mention it, Stereolasma looks a lot like the horn corals I found there. Thanks!

This site may offer some additional help https://www.fossilguy.com/sites/sharktooth-hill/index.htm
The site operator, Jayson, was one of the guys out at the quarry with me when we met. I think he plans on updating this page with some of his new finds from this past trip as well. @jayson-kowinsky

7 years, 2 months ago7 years, 2 months ago@hunter-thurmond – It looks vaguely like a poorly preserved internal mold of a gastropod. Is this the same material you posted as Fossil #018542? If so, you marked that as Mahantango Frm., so maybe @jayson-kowinsky could help once again.

Eleanor Gardner replied to the topic Shale questions in the forum What Is It? 7 years, 2 months ago
7 years, 2 months ago7 years, 2 months agoAgain, @jayson-kowinsky can likely provide more detail, but I’m thinking you’re looking at calcite (or quartz) veins within the shale. You can get dendrites (non-fossil crystal growths) of calcite and other minerals on parallel surfaces like shale layers or some fine-grained limestones. As for why the shale is black, it is likely due to high or…[Read more]
