Intact extinct elephant bird egg from the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology vertebrate paleo collection. Specimen 60611. There are very few of these left intact! #fossil

    • How can you tell egg versus oval rock?

    • @sadie-mills in this case, the egg was drained by humans so it is just the shell! There are other things for specimens that have undergone more alterations. Other times we can look at the texture or fine details of the fossilized egg shell, which is very different from surrounding rock. Most times the egg shell is cracked- adding more textures- fragile things like to break or get smushed so many times fossil eggs aren’t even really round!

    • wow!! awesome!

    • One ostrich eggs = twenty chicken eggs? Well, one elephant bird egg = how many ostrich eggs?🤔
