3 years, 4 months ago3 years, 4 months agoGreeting @a-trilobite ! I still maintain that this is not a crinoid stem. Honestly, it’s difficult to discern the exact nature your specimen. There are number of reason it causes me to think this is merely just the preservation of a topographical feature in marine sediment like ripple marks. There are others that make me wonder if there are…[Read more]

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months ago@jbauer – Hi Jennifer. I’ve posted several photos of these strange things on my Flickr page which can be viewed here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/rynoceras/albums/72157662532368937
You’ll see a mish-mash of several shots of different specimens which should give you more visual information than my single post here. I get out to Cannon Falls a…[Read more] -

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months ago@smoran & @jbauer I think I meant genus Cyrtina, but I most likely accidentally selected Cyrtospirifer when I entered it into the classification wizard. The basis for selecting Cyrtina is the reference I have for this locality is The Stratigraphy and Fauna of the Hackberry Stage of the Upper Devonian by Fenton and Fenton, 1924. In this…[Read more]

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months ago@jbauer could you take a look at these specimens (all the Rockport Quarry specimens from Alpena or Presque Isle) from the Devonian of northern Michigan? I attempted to narrow down and confirm IDs with PBDB but I’m just way outside of my comfort zone here. Thanks!!

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoHey @jacob-beasecker, I’m wondering if this specimen could be from the genus Heliophyllum? It seems fairly similar to the 3D model on the Digital Atlas of Life https://www.digitalatlasofancientlife.org/learn/cnidaria/anthozoa/rugosa/ @jbauer any ideas on this one?

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months ago@smoran & @jbauer I believe this is an internal mold, I could not find any traces of shell material. I uploaded another specimen that still had traces of shell, but it was unfortunately incomplete. In the literature for this locality I could find, Hemiaster californicus was the only identified echinoid. (https://www.jstor.org/stable/1304314?seq=1)

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoHi @jbauer – Thanks for your comment. Yes, it’s a very weird fossil. I’m mainly stabbing in the dark about these things but it’s been fun doing so. If it is stromatoporoid, the strange star-shaped feature (astrorhizae?), may be part of it or another creature entirely. I don’t think the circular stalk is unrelated to the “mushroom cap” because in…[Read more]
