The distal, proximal, and lateral views make me think that it’s a distal phalange. As i’ve been looking at Gomphothere phalanges the past few weeks, and by the size of it, it may be elephant. I’ll compare it to some of the text we have in the office and check out the collections. This looks pretty cool! Great job Lee!
April 25, 2019 at 10:16 am #55433Jeanette PirloKeymasterThey look proboscidean. I’d say potentially mammoth.
July 27, 2018 at 12:08 pm #40226Jeanette PirloKeymasterBy size I’d say whale but they don’t look like bone when I zoom in. Almost like compact sand. Granted the one showing all of them, the beak like one could be rostral but I’d want better pictures especially of the broken areas to look for spongy tissue Hey @rboessenecker what do you think?
November 12, 2017 at 1:13 pm #29113Jeanette PirloKeymasterHey @cgrant and @michael-ziegler what is your take on this paper and the techniques used? You have both been doing a lot of photogrammic work recently!

have you taught the geologic time scale? And if so, what type of activity did you use? Did you find it effective? After doing your activity, did you think of how you’d like to improve on your activity?
Let us know!

April 24, 2017 at 3:38 pm #22446Jeanette PirloKeymasterHey @llundgren, thanks for the great new resource! I’m sure we will get lots of interest from our teachers! We get questions regarding inverts often and this is a great website to pass along! @cgrant we may be able to incorporate this into our lesson plan ideas!
April 24, 2017 at 3:35 pm #22445Jeanette PirloKeymaster@tmorgan most of the specimens have not yet been uploaded to the online collections’ website. We collect so much each week that it’s difficult to keep up! I’ve included the link to the FLMNH Vert Paleo online collections database. You can look up any of our specimens there, if they have been uploaded. Let me know if I can help you with it!

April 24, 2017 at 3:32 pm #22444Jeanette PirloKeymaster@tmorgan I think that’s a great idea! Are your students old enough to read “Your Inner Fish”?
April 10, 2017 at 3:17 pm #21424Jeanette PirloKeymaster@ginny-switt I too enjoy the actual digging aspect, but the best part is seeing how our students react to the experience! I’m so glad you were able to share with them this experience and hear about their enthusiasm!
April 10, 2017 at 2:47 pm #21422Jeanette PirloKeymasterHi Lisa,
We had 18 teachers out this weekend! Adding to your list we had: @adam-fournier @todd-kohorst @ginny-switt @wendy-bailey @jamie-garcia @jonna-ocampo @danielle-brennan @lois-walsh @alicia-foy @wendy-bailey @catherine-mueller and @dipa-desai and a few others who do not have profiles yet. Teachers, what were some of your favorite experiences of this past weekend?!
April 5, 2017 at 1:56 pm #21306Jeanette PirloKeymaster@julie-niederkorn what kind of outreach activities have you done? Are they ones that you go out and participate in, or set up yourself? A few of us will be heading up to the Aurora Fossil Festival! We’re excited to go!
April 3, 2017 at 9:41 am #21192Jeanette PirloKeymaster@michael-reagin what were some of the important highlights of the meeting? We wish we could have been there!
April 1, 2017 at 8:19 pm #21165Jeanette PirloKeymaster@jon-cartier it’s great to hear that you found the collections tour helpful! My first tour taught me how to best curate my own specimens and the information I need to gather the next time I go collecting. Thanks for your input!
March 30, 2017 at 4:14 pm #21137Jeanette PirloKeymaster@joyce-drakeford I know the feeling of touring Gordon’s collection! I was in awe the first time there and it took me hours to get through everything! If you get a chance to come back to florida, you should sign up for some dig time at the museum’s dig site at Montbrook!
March 27, 2017 at 4:26 pm #20909Jeanette PirloKeymasterGiant jacket has finally arrived at the prep lab! After tireless hours of excavating, jacketing, cleaning, figuring out how to remove from the site, transporting, and unloading, the approximate 300 pound jacket containing Gomphothere jaws is home!
What are your favorite steps in moving specimens from the field to the lab?
