6 years, 11 months ago6 years, 11 months agoSponge material is not common in the Brush Creek, and when found is usually in small pieces. For several years I thought this was a bryozoan.

6 years, 11 months ago6 years, 11 months agoFound by the side of the road below a Brush Creek outcrop; missing the body chamber. It has a ding at the 8:00 position that may indicate predation, possibly by a shark. This is the only specimen I’ve had prepped.

6 years, 11 months ago6 years, 11 months agoThis specimen comes from a plant zone above the Ames limestone, and is shown as a pollen-producing structure in “Fossils of Ohio”. My son and I stumbled onto this zone fortuitously while scouting for Ames outcrops in the area. The zone also produced reeds and two nice pieces of permineralized (petrified) wood.

6 years, 12 months ago6 years, 12 months agoAnyone else in the house interested in fossils of the Pennsylvanian coal measures? I understand that some folks went to the Ambridge site during the GSA mtg in da ‘burgh.

@jayson-kowinsky would be a good person to ask about this. He and @bill-shankle were our fearless field trip guides. @jason-schein might want in on the conversation too.

Hi, @jeff-nolder – here is some information I found on the higher order classification: https://paleobiodb.org/classic/basicTaxonInfo?taxon_no=118963
And here the macrostrat database says Conemaugh is a group! https://macrostrat.org/sift/#/strat_name_concept/1821
I’m having a little difficulty seeing the plates on this chiton. Do you have any…[Read more]

Hi, @jeff-nolder – I’d like to tag in @mackenzie-smith our plant expert to check out your fossil!

Hi @jeff-nolder! I just want to confirm the orientation of the synangium (pollen bearing structure) in the matrix. It’s sort of on its side with the cup facing us and the attachment pointing away correct? (I am also tagging @jbauer to keep her in the loop of correspondence.)

Hi, @jeff-nolder – here is a possible updated classification for the higher order fields: http://fossilworks.org/?a=taxonInfo&taxon_no=199350
Is Conemaugh the Group or Formation? This seems to be variable (in many cases) depending on when it was updated. Here is what I found on Macrostrat: https://macrostrat.org/sift/#/strat_name/442

Really nice specimen, @jeff-nolder! Do you have another image with a scale? I’m part of the curation team that is working to verify data submitted through the portal. Really high quality data will be shared with iDigBio and will be more ‘searchable’ by researchers and interested parties.
Let me know if you have any questions,
Jen
