4 years, 8 months ago4 years, 8 months agoHi, @john-christian – do you have another image or two of this specimen with a scale bar? This species and subspecies wasn’t too easy to find information on, any suggestions for resources?
Talk to you soon, Jen-
Again it is packed away somewhere so I cannot add a scale. I believe measurements were provided. Sorry. Reference: A contribution to the invertebrate paleontology of the Texas Cretaceous: Texas Geological Survey Fourth Annual Report, pt. 2 by F. W. Craigin

Thank you, I can check out that reference!
The requests for scales are so that the curation team can help verify your measurements. It’s one of our image requirements for submission to iDigBio but certainly not required to be on the myFOSSIL eMuseum database. -Jen

I am part of the curation team that are validating information on the website. The specimens with really high quality associated data will be marked as ‘research grade’ and will be shared with iDigBio so they can be searchable through a large data portal…[Read more]

8 years ago8 years agoHey John (@john-christian),
I was thinking about your efforts and recommendations to better define the terms of mold, cast, steinkern etc.. I just think that there is some kind of a grey area in all that and that the real meaning will come up with the context. For example do paleontologists still have problems to define a fossil or at least they…[Read more]

I agree with Jack’s comment, there is no need to make it more complicated. Grabau’s definition is very good and I guess since he was half German he should have known the meaning of Steinkern also very well 😉
Btw: with this section: “… Occasionally the space between the two…[Read more]

8 years ago8 years ago@john-christian, hey John … Jack already gave you the correct definition. Here it is again with some more references: A mold preserves a negative imprint of the surface, while a cast preserves the external form of the organism (Taylor, Taylor & Krings, 2009, p. 22). Sometimes a shell can be filled with minerals and then dissolve away. The…[Read more]

I just printed this quote from Amadaeus Grabau in the Dry Dredgers bulletin this past month. It is in agreement with answers of others but this old time quote is a good one:

“Carbonated, or otherwise acidulated waters will dissolve calcareous fo…[Read more]
