This is probably not a fossil, but could you take a picture of the ends of the specimen? In Petrified wood, the rings (and sometimes even the cell structure) is preserved and easily visible -

@john-f unfortunately I do not think this is petrified wood or any other fossil, you can use the app Rockd to find places which are likely to have fossils and what type of fossils so don’t stop looking!

@john-f the “stick” is actually a result of mineral staining, not a fossil but a cool mineral phenomenon!

@john-f this is unfortunately not a fossil, this appears to be iron staining (iron oxides/rusts get dissolved in water that seeps into cracks and precipitates out when it evaporates).
