This does indeed look to be a piece of modern wood. I once spent an embarrassingly long amount of time uncovering a tree root which I thought was a fossil whale bone, so don’t feel bad!!

I’ve found bone material that was like wet tissue paper but if you put that in water, it would just disintegrate. Whatever it is, it is not a fossil but something that is modern.

I wish I could help you much but it is not a fossil but some kind of modern organic material. For easy to obtain preservatives I would suggest rubbing alcohol, definitely not vinegar which is an acid. I would take it to a museum or a wildlife sanctuary or zoo.

It looks like a mud puppy, which is a larger fully-aquatic salamander, that lives in freshwater lakes, ponds and rivers. We have them here in Canada and they are frequently caught (accidentally) while ice fishing. I’m not sure if they are native to your area but it looks quite similar to your specimen.
