3 years, 4 months ago3 years, 4 months ago@samantha-ocon@matthew-gramling When I looked at the map I was thinking Comfort as well. The island is situated in the cape fear river near the ‘H’ in New Hanover. There were many gastropod ‘unicorn horns’ on the island as well and that’s also where I found my sea biscuit fossils

Are these all the same ray plate, @kristen-cotiaux?
-
@samantha-ocon yes just different angles. So it’s part of a sting ray?
-
yes! It appears to a be a stingray plate, which is basically their equivalent of teeth. I’ll tag in @Vperez for some further ID help.
-
Partial Ray bar, not further capable of ID due to condition.
-
Hi Kristen! As the others said, it is definitely a partial tooth from a ray mouth plate. Given the worn condition, it is hard to say which ray species. It could be a spotted eagle ray, eagle ray, or cownose ray. So the safest identification is the order Myliobatiformes. You can update this in the classification field.
-
Thank you all, I have updated the classification

3 years, 4 months ago3 years, 4 months agoOne of my favorite things to do in the world is fossil hunt. I can spend hours combing through rocks and shells.
My favorite place to hunt is on Shark Tooth Island, NC. This 175m island is in the Cape Fear River and accessible by kayak. Boat launch is from River Road Park. The kayak over is a quick and easy 10-15min.
If you’re ever in W…[Read more]

When I lived in Wilmington, I enjoyed visiting this spot! I also had good fossil hunting luck on nearby Keg Island and North Topsail beach.

Shark tooth island in the lower Cape Fear River is a combination of two formations dredged from the river channel. the turritellite (turritella rock) is the Bald Head Shoals Formation of late Paleocene age. The Castle Hayne Formation is also on the island and is mostly the new Hanover Member which has an abundance of shark teeth concentrated by…[Read more]

3 years, 4 months ago3 years, 4 months agoI looked at the map and I found [all my fossils] in New Hanover county. Specifically where the “H” is in Hanover on the cape fear river. The light orange looks like this might be in the “Comfort Member” – whatever that is.
