Turtle for sure. The texture in the second picture is very turtle, and in the side shot you can see a bone texture.

@corinne-daycross thank you!!!

This is a fossil soft-shelled turtle shell piece! With a more specific location we could say more.

1 year, 7 months ago1 year, 7 months agoI was told this was turtle shell but now I’m starting to think egg shell!? Any thoughts?? #fossil

I think it looks like a bit of coral but i might be wrong
-
Where’d ya find it?

Similar to petoskey stones found in Michigan. Ancient fossilized coral that’s been broken up and ground down from glacial movements.

1 year, 7 months ago1 year, 7 months ago@mason-hintermeister I find pieces similar to this all over the place I live in Dubois, WY. the spot I found this one was by the river so it could have came from there but rockd says it could be mississippian – permian or pleistocene – holocene

Could we have a more specific location? Though coprolites are notoriously hard to verify, sometimes knowing the age and type of rocks they were found in can help. I can figure that out with the location using a geologic map (I use Rockd, a free online one which comes as an app and website).

@krystal-mcnamee Given those time periods and the general shape, I think it is far more likely it is a concretion. A concretion is a natural sedimentary rock formation which can take some really odd shapes. Sorry it is not a fossil, but still a pretty cool rock! Keep your eye out in your area for other fossils though, mississipian to permian aged…[Read more]
