I’ve never seen anything like this before but it is AWESOME!
-
Honestly, I haven’t either and am still confused 😂😂
-
Looks like a cut out of a tooth in gum, you can see the root and crown. It’s not a tooth, it just looks like one
-
cryptocrystalline quartz in hydrothermal vein… might be a possibility.
-
The ‘top’ is without a doubt a crinoid stem. My original hope was that it was a crinoid piece that had rolled in the mud making a concretion but then it turned out like that. In order for the geopetal to form the outside had to be hard and already there so that it could only fill part way with mud and then because a geode in the upper half. My mos…[Read more]

Where was it found?
-
No idea, was given to me
-
the 2nd pic is probaly a pic of a piece of crinoid in Cryptocrystalline Quartz in some vein
-
It’s the same rock, I sawed it in half so it’s the outside vs inside view
-
Awesome, great find!

3 years, 6 months ago3 years, 6 months agoUSU’s geology club meeting: I printed off a bunch of random/unrelated fossil photos such as dinosaurs tracks, jaws, pelvis, antlers, and so on then had everyone choice a couple. The member then had to make key observations about their given fossils to reconstruct an animal from those parts. People often don’t realize that complete skeletons are…[Read more]

3 years, 6 months ago3 years, 6 months agoFossilized salt crystals from a warm shallow sea. This just blows my mind, the samples I’ve collected from the Jefferson are not nearly as good, this is a lab sample. #fossil
-
Very interesting item. However to be considered a fossil, it must be derived from an organism. A worm tube for example, even though it is not part of the animal was derived from an living organism. Salt crystals are not. Therefore, while an interesting specimen, it is not a fossil.
-
It is not a fossil, technically it is a cast. It does show paleo climate however so is very important in paleontology. Also a burrow is a trace FOSSIL because it is created by an organism.

I hadn’t seen this year’s poster yet — it looks great! Thanks for sharing!
-
Happy fossil day! (It should be global, not national. And everyone should take the day off and dig for fossils)
-
@a-trilobite if only, if only……
-
is it only in America? never heard of it before.
-
@smudge-smith yeah it’s national not global. What a shame.

3 years, 6 months ago3 years, 6 months agoA beautiful field area yesterday to trace Lake Bonneville (a massive ice age lake that extended most of Utah and into several other states) shorelines and glacial deposits. Super fun to reconstruct the paleo environment, it was VERY different 18 million years ago! This area was the inlet for this massive lake and I think we did some really great…[Read more]
