Horn coral
doubtful it’s horn coral. tooth is a possibility, but probably just a rock
Definitely not a rock. Appears to have had an inner core and serrations. (This is my 7 yo sons post)
Worn crab claw?
Doubt it’s a crab claw. It’s solid not shell. It’s from a beach with plentiful early to mid Miocene fossils which makes me think crocodile or small toothed whale.
funny shaped rock
I added a couple more clear pictures. Clearly not a rock. Taken from a beach with an exposed St Mary’s formation (15-30 mya).
@smoran, @matthew-gramling, or @bill-heim could help.
the updated pictures show that it’s a crab claw. and it’s clearly not solid, but hollow. it’s just been filled in with sediment
Thanks l-m! I was able to find a reference with pics from the same formation. Miocene crab claw. I for get which beach I collected this from and the formations tilt into the earth along the Chesapeake Bay so the beach matters as to which formation. I believe I got it at Calvert Cliffs Park which would be the St Mary’s formation and late Miocene.
