4 years, 11 months ago4 years, 11 months agoWent to Gainesville Creek sifting. Curious. I’m loving this piece. But what is it? Any ideas? Thank you
-
@vperez you find a lot in the Gainesville creeks, any ideas on this one?

I can’t quite tell if it’s bone or rock. Unfortunately, if it is bone I don’t think I can identify it from this photo.

Hi, @lori-baltunis – I can’t tell if this is a fossil or not, could you post another image? If you access your specimens from myfossil.org you can easily add another photo to this same specimen information.

Hard to tell if this is basalt that has been tumbled in the surf with secondary mineralization or if it’s siltstone with mineralized parts which may or may not be fossils. Considering Iceland is volcanic with a history of basaltic erruptions and the black markings around the mineral (caused by a secondary reaction) make me lean towards this is…[Read more]

Often times when bones are fragmented like this it’s hard or impossible to tell what they came from. The exception would be if the fragment happens to contain a process or some feature that is diagnostic. So your ID of bone is actually the best anyone could do 😀
Thank you for your time.
