Hi, @Mariela-Pajuelo! I think this is a reptile tooth of some sort but knowing what age it is and where it is from would be very useful in identifying it.
Oh, good. We found it here in Gainesville, so Miocene strata.
@samantha-ocon, we found it here in Gainesville so Miocene strata.
@Mariela-Pajuelo, sorry for the late response! I think this is an alligator tooth. @jeanette-pirlo would be able to confirm.
I’m not convinced that it’s gator based on the root but @smoran may have more insight.
I see what you mean, @Jeanette-Pirlo! Vertebrates are hard lol
I’m going to mark this as Curated until we have more information. It is certainly interesting! I love vertebrates!
Hey @mariela-pajuelo and @samantha-ocon, this is dolphin tooth. Great find! I’m no expert on cetaceans, but it looks like it could be from the genus Pomatodelphis. Maybe do some research on that delphinid and see how well it compares.
@smoran excellent, we thought it could be a mammal. We have another that we will post photos of that could be the same with a more entire root. Thanks!
