DK has a pretty good handbook on Fossils that is of great use for both beginners and intermediate fossil collectors. Has some great front material on fossil collecting and preparing.
-
Audubon as well. Also check the Fossil Project’s YouTube page for great videos too.
-
and when you feel comfortable enough, I’d start checking the literature on the Kansas City Group like the USGS surveys, etc
-

@mark-breads ! I see what appear to be brachiopods and a possible horn coral mold.
-
Thanks!!! I always look for your expertise!
-
Please post all images in one specimen rather than create additional specimens for the same thing.
-
@mark-breads Thank you greatly for the compliment, but I certainly wouldn’t consider myself an expert
-
NW GA has similar Mississippian strata, so many of your specimens bear similarities to finds my friends or I have made in collecting.

@a-trilobite some help
-
maybe gastropod shell ?
-
Greetings @mark-breads !!! The coloration and translucency of this specimen lead me to think it possibly a scapula from a small modern vertebrate. @james-preston might be able to help.
-
Thanks yes it does I didn’t even know where to start but would like to know what type of animal?
-
@mark-breads possibly small canid or feline. Not sure though.
-
Deer I think but y’all never listen so yeah
-
A baby one
-
@aiden-gore all opinions are listened to here, aiden. 😊
-
Ok
-
Ok
-
Def a scapula possibly from a rabbit. Need to check references.
-
Ok now thinking fox or animal of that size. I just made a hasty guess on size without checking any references. Should check my hands on collection but they are in the garage because they are not allowed in the house 😁
-
Lol
-
Modern, not a fossil
-
I would go with fox. If that straight edge was rounded it would be an opossum but straight with to little ridges on the main part says fox.
