@matt-griffin, off the top of my head I don’t know any man-made object that looks quite like this (but it certainly could be one) but it is obviously made of or rich in iron, I wonder if it might be a limonite psuedomorph. In any case it is not a fossil.

Neat find! I agree with Mason – looks to be iron rich. Rocks in my area are often iron rich and I have seen some amazing shapes & vivid colors. Consider posting on mindat https://www.mindat.org/discuss.php

Awesome! Where’d you find it? Looks like just odds and ends of brachiopods. If you didn’t already, I’d recommend taking a soft toothbrush and some water to it to get rid of some of the dirt. I find similar stuff upstate NY, all a part from the Devonian era when things were underwater in the region

Unfortunately, this appears to be a piece of weathered limestone rather than a fossil.

Its extremely weathered but I think we are looking at cross-sections of brachiopods

Yes I agree with @mason-hintermeister < do you think the rounded, almost random looking edges (first image on left) could be crinoid flowers?

I think it may be a worn bryozoan or algae, it is hard to say given it current state

These are some lovely Silurian fossils! They seem to have been dolomitized, ie preserved in a mineral called dolomite. They are marine critters, looks like mostly brachiopods (AKA Lamp Shells) and bryozoans (A colonial organism), keep an eye out for trilobites and crinoids (Sea Lillies) too. To make this research grade, you could go on the app or…[Read more]
