4 years, 8 months ago4 years, 8 months agoHi, @matthew-croxton – For trace fossils, we are suggesting users put Ichnofossil as the Phylum and then use the ichnology terminology for the generic and specific assignments. This will allow us to filter all the trace fossils uploaded and work to be more true to the idea that we shouldn’t infer trace maker from the trace.
Does that sound…[Read more]

4 years, 8 months ago4 years, 8 months agoHi, @matthew-croxton – cool specimen – is that the siphuncle you zoomed in on?? This is my favorite part of cephalopod anatomy, such an amazing piece of morphology.
You have some coordinates plugged in the location fields – but I think they are incorrect as a google search indicates they are on the Antarctic ice shield. Any idea where you found…[Read more]

For the specimen to be integrated into iDigBio we would need to include an image with a scale so we can confirm your measurements. If this is something you are interested in please feel free to upload another image with a ruler or scale card! Please let me know if you have questions about this – the specimen will…[Read more]

4 years, 8 months ago4 years, 8 months agoHi, @matthew-croxton – Excellent specimen. Do you have an image of the other valve? This would help us confirm and/or improve your identification information. For the specimen to be shared with iDigBio we will have to remove the image of the outcrop as it is not of the specimen. This is something that would be useful in our groups to share with…[Read more]

5 years, 7 months ago5 years, 7 months agoMy apologies for not replying sooner. No reply for me means “I don’t know”. At times, these two were thought to be synonymous. I think that Treptoceras is more common and has a wider range. I’ll have to look dig into some siphuncle photos and see if I can tell the difference. Thanks for asking! @jbauer@matthew-croxton

As I always say, location information is critical to correctly identifying a fossil specimen. It this specimen was found on a Richmondian Stage formation in the Cincinnati Arch, then it’s probably Protaraea richmondensis.
It was indeed in the Cincinnati Arch, although I’m hazy on which locality. Apologies for not being able to provide more specific information.
