Greetings @samantha-ocon and @jbauer! I wondering if I might get your opinion on my classification of this specimen. I believe it’s a strophomenid, but wanted to get your confirmation.
Hi, @Matthew-Gramling! I also think this is a strophomenid based on the hinge line and its roundness, but I’m not a brach expert.
Thank you@samantha-ocon!!!
I agree with both of you!! @samantha-ocon & @matthew-gramling
There may be some literature on this formation you are working in, have you tried looking for any on google scholar? That’s usually my go to. If you find something you don’t have access to let Sam or I know and we can get it through our institutions.
Thank you @jbauer! I have not used google scholar as of yet, but gladly will. I have scoured google and several database for information. I have also been in correspondence with Dr. Timothy Chowns, who is an authority on the geology of northwest GA especially the Red Mountain Formation. His specialization is principally sedimentary petrology, so fossil identification is more of a secondary focus. Unfortunately, I have not heard from him in several weeks.
I have found that comprehensive treatments on the fauna of the Red Mountain formation are rare, old, of poor image quality, and often not open access. As such, I would be glad to take you up on your offer regarding journal articles.
I have found a few articles via google scholar if you the access and availability to obtain them. Thank you again for all your assistance. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-paleontology/article/first-fossiliferous-pridolian-beds-from-the-southern-appalachians-in-northern-alabama-and-the-age-of-the-uppermost-red-mountain-formation/0E01F41F71172A762F39DF6A6554D061
