6 years, 5 months ago6 years, 5 months agoHello,
I just wanted to share that a resource that sometimes is forgotten is the public library. Our public library in Gainesville has some STEM outreach programs that worked great when I introduced my students to 3D printing. A public library employee brought some STEM kits that allow the students to do some coding. While I was working with a…[Read more]

Is the December 3D printing workshop in Gainesville still happening?

6 years, 5 months ago6 years, 5 months agoHello,
Below I have copied a document I created to help my students work with the 3D scanner. It includes the steps to follow for 3D scanning. I have revised this document multiple times, please feel free to make changes as needed for your classroom. I have a copy next to each scanner. At the end of the document, there are some examples to…[Read more]

Hello from Florida! I was wondering if it would be possible to get the set of questions your students were using to interview the scientists for the videos they were making in your class. We briefly discussed this over the summer training and it would be helpful to have some of the questions as I revise last year’s lesson plan.
Thanks,
Mayra

6 years, 6 months ago6 years, 6 months agoI have a copy of last year’s letter. Is the survey still 54 questions? It’s going to take me a while to collect these letters. Can I still let them explore the scanners or not at all?

Yes, the survey is still 54 questions but we have updated it based on your feedback. This survey was designed for and validated with middle and high school students.
You can definitely engage in all iDigFossils activities. We need informed consent when we intend to use data for “research” purposes (i.e., presentations, publications) but we can…[Read more]

6 years, 6 months ago6 years, 6 months agoHi,
I was wondering if this year the students are completing an IRB parent and student consent form. I have a new group of students this year. Also, my plans are to scan in semester one and do the projects in semester 2. We are advancing in our light unit so I would like to introduce the students to the 3D scanning process soon (next week or…[Read more]

Hi Mayra, we have an active IRB approval and you can use the same letters we used last year. I am submitting an IRB renewal where I will request we use opt-out letters rather than the opt-in letters we are using now. I can post scans of our approved consent/assent letters here. Because your two activities happen over 3+ months, I suggest you do…[Read more]

Thanks for sharing this, Mayra!
Coincidentally, our project just visited a couple of public libraries with makerspaces in NM last week. Collaboration with libraries is a great way to extend this project!
