Hi, @melissa-calvert – what makes you think this is an egg? Most of the bed rock in NY are ancient oceans or really old metamorphic rock (no fossils). It’s likely this is a concretion or a really worn rock rather than an egg. Fossilized eggs are incredibly rare, sadly.

Hi, @melissa-calvert – see my other comment on your other image of this specimen. I think this is a rock rather than an egg.

4 years, 8 months ago4 years, 8 months agoFound this in Upstate NY. Looks like a footprint. What do you think?
-
Hi, @melissa-calvert – I don’t think this is a footprint. It looks like a strangely weathered rock to me.
-
not weathering or a foot print. ancients would have used this as a base to pound/shape out smaller rounder stones with a hammer stone.

Melissa Calvert, go to a geologic map of VT. to identify the primary rocks present in the location where your rock was found. Knowing the age and general geology of the area will help you to sort out if what you have is a fossil or other. Here is a link to such a map. I use such maps here in Montana to help me identify good locations for fossil…[Read more]
