5 months, 2 weeks ago5 months, 2 weeks ago@monica-murray looks more like a gomphothere to me (older and rare), but I might consider showing it to a local paleontologist to confirm (it also may have some scientific significance). The Boesseneckers tend more towards whales, but they are a pair of paleontologists in the area I can put you in contact with if you’d like!

1 year, 3 months ago1 year, 3 months ago@monica-murray These appear to be broken bits of mammoth tooth slats, likely from a new tooth (tips are preserved and unworn). Nice finds! Were they found together?

1 year, 4 months ago1 year, 4 months ago@monica-murray Lovely artifact! I study bones more than stones, but side-notched points like this tend to be from the archaic period but are not exclusively so.

1 year, 4 months ago1 year, 4 months ago@monica-murray I just heard back from an expert, it is most likely from the small but apparently common Crenatosiren olseni but could also bears some resemblance to Metaxytherium albifontanum. Either way, it is an Oligocene dugong!

1 year, 5 months ago1 year, 5 months ago@monica-murray These are periotic bones from dolphins/whales (another type of earbone). These guys are actually identifiable, if you can post them individually with a scale (coin or ruler) I can contact an expert and probably get a good ID and age on it.

1 year, 5 months ago1 year, 5 months agoEpic find @monica-murray! This is a lovely ray or skate dermal denticle (or “buckler”), a specialized type of scale/armor. Unfortunately there isn’t much published work on identifying them to my knowledge.
