I’ve heard that there is some interest for a revival of the weekly paleo lab group to share updates, ideas, etc. Lets try for next Monday, 29 June at 10:30 at

    https://uflphi.zoom.us/j/6308489588

The suggestion was also made that we do this every two week, which I am OK with as well. See you then, if you are interested.

No, this forum is referring to the Martin-Marietta owned Belgrade Mine in Jones Count, North Carolina.

You can read more about the mine here: https://www.myfossil.org/featured-fossil-rare-extinct-land-mammal-from-belgrade-north-carolina/

@theodore-gray    Frankly, they all look alike to me.  However, I suggest you obtain a copy of Collector’s Guide to Texas Cretaceous Echinoids by William W Morgan, Schiffer publishing, 2016.  He’s got all of them covered.

I’m seeing that we have many new members of this group. Does anyone have any mammals fossils that they have found at the Belgrade mine from North Carolina?  If so, send me photos, or upload them to our EMUSEUM. I then can explain why they are interesting.

    • I’m here in Craven County, NC but turned down a chance to go into Belgrade. (Didn’t think there were mammals there.)

      • Oh yes, and they are very interesting–I study ancient mammals that lived on land. At Belgrade these include horses, carnivores, rodents, tiny deer-like mammals, peccary, giant pig-like mammals, and possibly rhino. These are otherwise found from other early Miocene (about 20 million years old) localities elsewhere in the US, including California,…[Read more]

Hi all–given the fact that we met just this past Thursday, lets make today’s lab meeting at 10:40 optional. What this means is that I will connect then and if anyone wants to talk OK, but you do not have to–if you have other things to do.

For those of you who are interested, we will again use the link below.…[Read more]

    • Sounds good, Bruce. I will probably not connect today, as we are still scrambling to get everything straightened out for the online transition of the bio lab.

@samantha-ocon , @sadie-mills  I have an answer for you.  I got the following information from one of the prep lab people who actually use these tools:

The normal tool we use is Chicago Pneumatic scribe which comes in any number of sizes depending on what you want to use it for.  Paleo Tools has a wide selection of the Chicago and also se…[Read more]

@samantha-ocon I could check to see what they use in the Cincinnati Museum prep labs.  Maybe that will help.  I am laid up with a foot injury so I’ll have to get one of my friends to check.

@samantha-ocon  I am sorry I can’t offer any help along those lines.  I don’t use this type of equipment as it isn’t generally needed for most fossils around here.  “hard core” people who do lots of this type of work are the ones who use these.  If you do get one of these remember that you still need a strong suction device pulling away the mat…[Read more]
