That is a stalagmite
-
Idon’t think so. It was a feature of an Mississippian fossil reef. The vertical lines do not match stalagmite growth rings. Though the exterior looks very similar. Smithville,TN has an abundance of marine fossils and this was collected alongside a great many specimen species. Sponges, brachia, pods, and crinoids. We’re all collected within 1 foo…[Read more]

Sorry for the typos, small chat box..

I’ve also have never seen space between stalagmite growth rings, I looked online and could not find any examples.
-
I was wondering if it was some kind of stromatolite.
-
Could have been a dry period. That would explain the gaps. It could have came from somewhere higher and fell among the other fossils. It just looks to cave like to me.
-
I checked amongst Google images, there are also a few examples with gaps like uiyrs

I’d really like to find a definitive answer for this specimen. It has been bugging me for a while now. The specimen post to the right of this post is also mine, and these were collected as as side-by-side. Take a look.

sorry like yours. Some were also as lightly coloured as your specimen. I think youve made a good call and you have an excellent specimen.

is this magnetic ?
-
Is not.
-
Dragon Stone 🐉
-
aka Septarian Nodule I think
-
Doesn’t seem to fit the bill. Has very similar color and texture to fossil bones collected at the same site. It’s a Cretaceous fossil bed.
-
Could be a coprolite?
-
I suppose it could be. Yet there is some kind of chaotic symmetry going on here.
