4 years, 4 months ago4 years, 4 months agoActually I really don’t remember exactly where I found it. I’ve been collecting fossils and unusual rocks for so long I remember the origins of most but sadly a few are a mystery. I’m a longtime collector but not much knowledge of what things are. Thanks to everyone who has looked at and commented on some of my “finds”. I’m learning a lot already.

4 years, 5 months ago4 years, 5 months agoYes I have many more of a few of these pieces.
I’ll post again and combine multiple photos in one post since I now know how to do it. (I think).
It will probably make more sense and hopefully easier to identify what some thins are.
Thanks for the feedback! -

That would make sense – you guys are centered on a Paleozoic basin! @Jbauer knows a lot more than I do.

Welcome to our site! I’m not sure anyone has given you any new resources, but I’d always recommend The Digital Atlas of Ancient Life: https://www.digitalatlasofancientlife.org/learn/ ! It’s a great reference and easy to read if you just want to brush up on a lot of new topics!
In regards to the fossils, I think these are mostly brachiopods!…[Read more]

Do you have any more information about where this was found? If so, we can use tools like macrostrat: https://macrostrat.org/map/#/z=1.5/x=16/y=23/bedrock/lines/ to figure out how old this rock is – very helpful information for IDing these awesome specimens!

Hi, @Randy-Fridlund! This appears to be recrystallized calcite – this can happen when limestone or shelly materials get exposed to water and dissolve. Over time, the dissolved calcite recrystallizes in empty spaces, which is what we are seeing here. I’m not sure I can make out anything from the pattern that is appearing here.

I agree with @samantha-ocon

Hi @Randy-Fridlund! I’m seeing rugose corals (also known as horn corals) in the bottom right, and brachiopods (look like shells) in the rest of the specimen. Great find!

Same here, @Randy-Fridlund. These appear to be rugose corals in the bottom right with brachiopods dispersed throughout. Very cool!

This looks similar to some of the agatized wood I’ve seen, but I’m no expert in fossil plant material. Tagging @Mackenzie-Smith.

It looks like it’s woody. Sadly, there is no cellular material preserved though.
