3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoShanklin Iow looks like an amazing place to find fossils… I’m reading that south UK crosses over several periods, so best guess is Carboniferous or possibly Jurassic.

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoThanks for your confidence in me, but I am very amateur when it comes to fossils. I do love them though, they are both fascinating and beautiful. I look forward to seeing your specimens!

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoIt’s an interesting suggestion, but the fossil resembles the Syringopora that are found in abundance in Sligo. I’m not seeing worm burrows that look like mine, which seems too uniform. I’ll have to check out your fossil if you have it posted.

3 years, 8 months ago3 years, 8 months agoOr Are you referring to another one of my fossils? The one that looks like a worm tube? Crazily enough, it’s actually a worm snail shell, and you can tell this by the fact that it has three layers and shiny on the inside. The worm tube is dull on the inside and made of only two layers…

Hey @rebecca-oloughlin ! Looks live you have another Carboniferous anthozan there. Probably a genus of coral of some variety.

*anthozoan

Looks like you might have a Siphonophyllia specimen here. https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Figura-2-Siphonophyllia-1-4-Siphonophyllia-siblyi-SEMENOFF-TIAN-CHANSKY-1974-1_fig1_39402817

Sweet! I think you are right again! The fossils I have are definitely curved, which is why I thought horn coral, but the siphonophyillia looks just like it, in size plus it’s common in the area I found it in. Thank you!
-
Matthew, some of the google searches I did called the siphonophyllia a rugose. Is that others being just as new as I am, or are they related?
-
@rebecca-oloughlin Siphonophyllia is a rugose or horn coral. A very large one at that. So, yes you are right in assuming a relationship.
-
Thank you for that information, Matthew!
-
Glad to be of service @rebecca-oloughlin!!!
