4 years, 9 months ago4 years, 9 months agoThis is heavier than expected, solid and not easily chipped. Found when I dug deeply around a tree stump in an area with an ancient glacial pond where many native peoples artifacts are regularly found. Clinton, Ohio
Anyone have any ideas? -

4 years, 11 months ago4 years, 11 months agoThis was fun! Walking on the beach near St Petersburg Fl., my daughter looked down and just picked this up out of the sand! We were told it is from an extinct Mako ?

great!
-
Awesome find! @vperez might be able to confirm that it is a mako.
-
This tooth is from Carcharodon hastalis. It was originally considered an extinct mako, but now is thought to be the ancestor of the living Great White shark. Very nice find!

@smoran or jeanette-pirlo, any thoughts? Looks horse like to me but also kind of flattened and worn.
-
Yep! It’s a lower horse tooth. It’s a little trickier to tell the age of it, but Miocene or Pliocene seems likely.
-
I agree with Sean on the ID but he def knows better on the age

Hi, @rita-klein – from what these mammal experts say we can update your classification and geochronology sections a bit. Kingdom Animalia > Phylum Chordata > Class Mammalia > Order Perissodactyla > Family Equidae > Genus Equus. Eon Phanerozoic > Era Cenozoic. Let me know if you need any more help, Jen

looks like a game ball
Might try an archeology site.
@rita-klein This is an Alumina ball used in a ball mill to grind any number of materials used for coatings. When I worked in the appliance industry we used these in huge mills for grinding the glasses and clays used to make porcelain enamel. The ceramics industry uses them for this purpose as well. They are commonly found in any area where…[Read more]
