6 years, 8 months ago6 years, 8 months agoI just attended my first Summer Symposium at the Museum of the Earth, Ithaca, New York where I provided a poster on “Prehistoric Pittsford” and donated a few more flats of eurypterid material from the Tastings Site (Pittsford, N.Y.). The symposium was well attended July 29th and the following day was field trips to area Devonian sites led by…[Read more]

Wow! Thank you for sharing, @samuel-ciurca! Sounds like a great symposium. I bet the field trip was terrific with Carl co-leading. He is such a character! 🙂 If you have any pictures from the field trip, we’d love to see them in the forums.

7 years, 1 month ago7 years, 1 month agoSALVAGE PALEONTOLOGY: Many years ago, I collected rare fossil assemblage from the Silurian Maplewood Shale in the Genesee River Gorge at Rochester, New York. The unit is almost impossible to collect from due to rapid decomposition of the shale. But, because of a fresh exposure of the shale, I was able to collect rare (probably new) crinoids,…[Read more]

Amazing, @samuel-ciurca! I am thrilled to hear this news. @jkallmeyer will be interested to see the rare crinoids! I wonder if anyone else in the Rochester area has been able to collect there — @dkrisher, are you aware of this spot?

7 years, 1 month ago7 years, 1 month agoNothing much new – just going through basement fossils from the Maplewood Shale here in Rochester, New York and figuring out how I’m going to get them to the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History to get preserved so researchers have access to them for study.
-
@samuel-ciurca, would you feel comfortable sharing a photograph of your basement? I’m sure many other amateurs would like to see how you organize your “to be curated” collection!

Hi, @samuel-ciurca – Where did you find this specimen? That can help us narrow down some more of the geologic context.
Classification can be updated: Class Xiphosura Order Xiphosurida > Family Eurypteridae

Wow! @mackenzie-smith did you see these seeds?
I’ve never seen so many Devonian aged seeds in one rock. Is there a name attached to the yet (have they been identified @samuel-ciurca)?
