Inner mold of a gastropod shell, I think.

Wow it got the shape and fossilized?

yup. the soil filled in the hollow inside of the shell, and after the shell decomposed the inside mould, now fossilised, was left behind

Now that is a top dollar question! The short answer, is no. One can use the flow bands in cave rock similar to rings on a tree, HOWEVER, not every cave is the same. For example the rate of flow depends a lot of precipitation so a cave in a dry climate will have a different years per band then somewhere in the tropics. There is a lot that factors…[Read more]

the average stalactite/stalagmite grows around 1 cm per century, but that is a rough estimation so it can be much more or much less.
