Looks like a fossil fern in the “Neuropteris-like group.” These are consistent with specimens from the Carboniferous period Mazon Creek Formation, but without any locality data, there is no way of knowing for sure.
-
Thanks 🙏
-
@sara-andrade Medullosales would be the taxonomic Order for this specimen. As @patrick-hsieh states, this specimen is likely from a Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian epoch) formation.
-
I also have one of these that was given to me and I was never able to figure it out

It’s a trilobite

Thank you a-trilobite

Hey @sara-andrade ! @nathan-newell might be able to help with narrowing down the taxonomy. I’ve seen similar trilobites to this one in field, but can’t remember the ID.
-
My best guess is Order Phacopida such as Phacops and Calymene.
-
Were these found in Portugal?

@sara-adrade That’s quite a story. I’m glad you were able to save the collection and hopefully we can help you with gaining information on your specimens.

@sara-andrade That’s a sad story, but I’m glad you were able to save these specimens. I wish they could have had some information regarding their geological provenance, but that can be procured over time. They are really superb specimens, especially this trilobite.

@sara-andrade @matthew-gramling Sorry for the late reply! I think your right, Matthew, that looks like a Phacopid to me, like Phacopid/Eldredgeops. It’s great that you were able to save it, Sara, that’s a really nice specimen!

five-fold radial symmetry indicates that this is some type of echinoderm
Sea urchin probably
Thank you
As said earlier sea urchin
👌🏻thanks
@jbauer Might be able to help with an ID.
https://www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/data/echinoid-directory/taxa/key.jsp?id=388 is a pretty neat website that walks you through how to identify your own echinoid specimens. You’ll have to look up some of the morphological terms they use, but thats part of the fun!
That’s great! Thank you all so much
👍
I agree with the sea urchin identification & double down with @patrick-hsieh‘s suggestion to use and explore the echinoid directory – it’s such a great resource with amazing images. You could update your taxonomy to be Phylum Echinodermata, Class Echinoidea
